What is Cowboy Action Shooting?

Cowboy Action Shooting™ is a multifaceted shooting sport in which contestants compete with firearms typical of those used in the taming of the Old West: single action revolvers, lever action rifles, and side by side double barreled, pre-1899 pump, or lever action shotguns. The shooting competition is staged in a unique, characterized, "Old West" style.  Contestants shoot in several one- to four gun stages (courses of fire) in which they engage reactive steel and cardboard silhouette targets. Scoring is based on accuracy and speed.

What do I need for Cowboy Action Shooting?

Required Apparel - Dress appropriate to the period 1860 to 1899. The minimum requirements are cowboy hat, jeans or skirt (no designer jeans of any kind), long sleeve shirt or blouse with button front, and cowboy boots or shoe types of the era. (No tennis shoes allowed).  Victorian style clothing can be worn, such as derbies and high top hats, old style suits, etc. for the gents and bonnets, feathered hats, long dresses and high top button shoes for the ladies. It's not mandatory to dress as a cowboy. Indian scout, Cavalry Officer, Blacksmith, Doctor, Schoolteacher, Judge, Storekeeper or Undertaker of the "period" is OKEY DOKEY.

Is the old gold sack low???? Well, Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc. are good sources of clothing to get started.

Firearms

Two single action revolvers with holsters.

Lever action rifles and carbines with external hammer chambered for a pistol caliber, 45 Long Colt, 44-40, 357 magnun/38 Special

A double barrel side-by-side shotgun in 10, 12, 16 or 20 gauge.
Old time pre1900 lever or pump shotguns with external hammers such as Winchester 1887 or Model '97 are allowed.

·        Rifle and pistol bullets must be lead alloy only.

·        No jacketed ammo or gas checks allowed.

·        Maximum velocity for pistol cartridges is 1000 fps and rifle is 1400fps.

·        Shotshell #6 or smaller (71/2 is ideal).

·        Modern replicas of all firearms are, of course, legal.
